Consistency builds awareness, legitimacy and all-important trust (vital in unpredictable times). Yet so many online business owners struggle to stay consistent. Here are the common mindset traps to avoid if you want to build real momentum and recurring revenue in your business.

Online entrepreneurs and business owners tend to be a multi-passionate and creative bunch. If you’re like me and have all the ideas it can be difficult to stay consistent and see them through to completion.

Added to that, mind gremlins get in the way of you showing up, whispering that no one is watching anyway, chipping away at your confidence and credibility.

The truth is that the more you show up, (even when you don’t feel like it) the more legitimate your business appears and the more trusted you and your brand become.

Consistent efforts are what bolster your productivity and progress towards both creating consistent revenue and reaching your business goals.

So how can you stay consistent?

Essential mindset shifts to show up consistently, connect with your people and skyrocket your results:

Mindset Shift #1: Break up with perfectionism and build yourself up instead

How many times have you beaten yourself up for not emailing your list/posting on social/following up when you said you would, and allowed that one small mishap to completely derail you?

We do this all the time when we’re trying to implement a new lifestyle habit, such as healthy eating and exercising, and it’s exactly the same principle in business.

Success is showing up consistently, imperfectly, even when you don’t feel like it.

Instead of berating yourself for not being consistently consistent, decide what good enough looks like for you and commit to it. Define for yourself: “What is success?” and “What does it mean to show up?” (Pro Tip: A simple marketing and content repurposing system is a godsend for this, e.g. Repurpose your podcast or live streams into blog, email and social content).

Then focus on building a rock solid foundation that will survive any disruption or issue that may arise (because: life). Lock in your self-worth, self-belief and self-love with practices that support you (I love journaling and EFT). This will help you get back to the powerful, wonderful you super quick when things don’t go quite to plan.

Mindset Shift #2: Ditch the ‘all or nothing’ mindset and focus on ONE thing

The biggest mistake I see people make in online business is doing all the things at once. This is the best way to set yourself up for failure.

In business and in life, it’s not the big things that add up in the end; it’s the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that make the biggest difference. It’s so easy for us forward thinking entrepreneurs to focus on the big dream, and neglect the steps to actually get there…

In simple terms: PRIORITISE FOR PRODUCTIVITY.

I recommend writing down all of your goals and putting them into categories. Separate them into ‘now’, ‘next’, and ‘later’ categories. They ask yourself: “What do I have the capacity for right now?” “What’s the biggest priority?”

If you’re NOT here for burn-out, this is an essential mindset shift to make. You simply cannot do everything at once so pick one thing: one marketing strategy, one platform, one content style and commit to consistently doing the work on it. Give it three months and measure your results. Tweak it or ditch it depending on your results but please give it a proper chance. I see so many people giving up just before things start to work.

When you feel disheartened that you’re not seeing results like “make 6-figures in 6 weeks” (which are utter rubbish by the way), focus on what IS going well.

By creating a short, simple daily practice of listing what you have achieved and what you DO have in your life now, and being thankful for each little thing, you will raise your energetic vibration and show the universe your ready for even more goodness. Try it. I bet it makes you feel amazing.

Mindset Shift #3: Swap “responsibility is a prison” for “discipline brings freedom”

For a lot of entrepreneurs, the motivation for having an online business is to create freedom. You may want more time for family, hobbies, or the financial freedom to do whatever you want!

When freedom is the goal, we can become resistant to discipline, thinking it’s a ridgid, masculine thing that curtails our creativity.

Here lies the paradox: you need discipline to create freedom in your business and life.

Don’t put your head in the sand and ignore those little niggles in your business (like not consistently following up on getting contracts signed, or pulling together your T&Cs) — at some point they will come back and bite you.

Instead be disciplined with your boundaries and watch how much time and energy you free up to focus on the things that really move the needle in your business.

Whatever problems you encounter on your business journey, deal with them swiftly so they’re off your plate. We often hope for the best, hope that someone won’t notice, hope that it will never happen. The thing is, that hope turns into fear, fear that it WILL happen, and that nagging fear affects your system and how you show up.

Whenever anything happens, Deal + Learn + Move. Deal with it immediately, learn your lesson from it, move on. You’ll thank yourself once you follow this simple system.

Learn the acronym DLM to help you remember. Also write a list of those who you can confide in and get advice and support from, so you don’t feel alone. Then in the Deal stage, reach out to them first before you take action.

Mindset shit #4: Instead of thinking “I have to do this”, let yourself quit

Yes, I know this sounds counterintuitive. But one thing that can be strangely helpful when you find yourself resisting taking action on your carefully laid-out business plans, is to allow yourself to reconsider your goal entirely.

Ask yourself: “What if I just stopped torturing myself and gave in to all this resistance? What if I call it quits, abandon my goal, and allow my life to stay exactly the way it is now?”

Knowing you always have options takes the pressure off and allows you to recommit to your goal with more fervor.

Remember, your business isn’t something you have to do, it’s something you have the opportunity to do, and you decide if you want to take that opportunity up my friend.

Practice surrendering to the resistance by journaling on the question of “what if I quit?” and see what it does to your motivation.
